Fled from war, forced into marriage: The plight of Syrian refugee girls in Lebanon

Every year, hundreds of Syrian girls living in refugee camps across Lebanon are kidnapped and forced into marriage. Rights groups including the Freedom Fund have called on the international community to strengthen the mechanisms that tackle the vulnerability of Syrian refugees.

Nobel laureates, leaders gather to push child slavery onto the global agenda

Around the world, 260 million children are out of school and at risk of being forced into child labour. Last weekend, a group of Nobel laureates and global leaders that included the Dalai Lama, former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands met in Delhi to push child rights onto the global agenda.

Navy shows off technology to fight fishing abuses

Thailand’s Navy has unveiled new technology to monitor fishing boats in a renewed effort to crack down on illegal fishing, forced labour and corruption in the seafood industry. However, outside groups are sceptical the new system will achieve what it is set out to do unless more human enforcement is put into place.

Bill to launch End Modern Slavery Initiative passes in the U.S. Senate

U.S. Senator Bob Corker, chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, announced passage of a bipartisan initiative to end modern slavery worldwide. The initiative will help establish an effort in concert with the private sector and foreign governments to eliminate modern slavery and human trafficking around the globe.

Forced labour is a persistent issue in the apparel industry. Using a range of indicators like auditing processes, worker recruitment and labour rights, Humanity United’s KnowTheChain initiative ranked 20 apparel companies for their safeguards against forced labour, and three of the top companies were Adidas, The Gap and H&M.
