Members of a gang who forced Vietnamese girls and women into slavery in nail bars in Britain have been jailed in a case that used new laws against forced labour for the first time.

White House designates January as “National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month”

The White House last week designated January 2018 as “National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month”. The Trump administration announced that in January the U.S. will sign two anti-trafficking bills into law.

Rohingya children facing ‘massive mental health crisis’

Of the more than 655,000 Rohingya who have fled to Bangladesh since the Myanmar military began its crackdown in late August, around 380,000 are minors. “What we’re seeing is the perfect breeding ground for a massive mental health crisis for children,” said a mental health adviser for Save the Children.

Brazil government backs off weakening slave labour laws

Brazil’s government issued a decree backtracking on plans to weaken the definition of slave labour in response to criticism and a court suspension of the original edict. The revised decree undid changes to the definition involving exhaustive working hours and degrading work conditions.

New anti-trafficking law soon: Life term for repeat offenders
The Times of India, 28 December 2017
The Indian government is set to introduce a law to guard against human trafficking, proposing a 10-year punishment for those engaging in “aggravated forms of trafficking” while seeking life imprisonment for repeat offenders.
