Patterns and dynamics of slavery and bonded labour in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh: Findings from life story analysis

January 11, 2016 / Hotspots, Our Reports Ginny Baumann / @Freedom_Fund

The Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex has partnered with the Freedom Fund in the planning, monitoring, evaluation and learning activities of its anti-slavery work in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, India.

This report* summarises the findings of the analysis of multiple life stories collected across the Freedom Fund slavery hotspot in northern India by NGO representatives at the Collective Story Analysis workshop 13-16 May 2015. The Institue of Development Studies (IDS), University of Sussex, outlines the major findings and key system dynamics that emerged in the story analysis.

IDS selected eight partners in several clusters of villages to engage in a comprehensive process of collection of “causal accounts”. This process provided IDS with an unbiased and rigorous means of assessing the relevance of the hotspot interventions, and also yielded a handful of the most important socio-economic indicators to include in the baseline and follow up prevalence studies.
