Free the Slaves (FTS) will study the desirability and feasibility of supporting the establishment of a South Asian regional civil society coalition to combat slavery and human trafficking. Free the Slaves will also make recommendations to the Freedom Fund concerning the process of forming a coalition and potential structures.

The Freedom Fund will receive recommendations from Free the Slaves on whether and how to initiate a coalition and will reflect the findings from the convening, interviews, desk research, and FTS’ experience in forming, participating and supporting coalitions, such as the Alliance to End Slavery and Trafficking (ATEST) and the Alliance Against Trafficking in Women and Children in Nepal (AATWIN).

Convening and coalition building

The Free the Slaves Forum 2014 is intended to be an annual event which provides a unique opportunity for leaders of the anti-slavery movement to convene, share evidence-based practices and build a shared agenda as a movement.

In order to achieve the goals of the Forum, it is critical to involve leaders working in different geographic areas and contexts. The inclusion of leaders working on the frontlines of fighting slavery is imperative to ensuring nuanced discussion and the development of a shared action agenda.

The Freedom Fund’s grant enables participants from developing countries to travel to the Forum.

Convening and coalition building

The Freedom Fund partnered with the Daniel Elkes Foundation and international anti-slavery organisation Free the Slaves to convene the first Freedom from Slavery Forum in September 2014. In 2015, 35 to 40 leaders of anti-slavery organisations will identify specific actions they can take, individually or collectively, to address gaps in the anti-slavery movement. The goal is to create a long-term process and structure for dialogue, sharing of evidence and lessons learned and building of a common agenda among anti-slavery organisations.
