Rights Education and Development Centre (READ)

READ is a non-profit organisation, established in 2001, that seeks to bring social and economic development to the most marginalised communities of Tamil Nadu. READ’s work with the Freedom Fund focuses on eradicating bonded labour in spinning mills in Erode district.

READ will work in Erode District, which is a source and destination area for young women entering bonded labour in spinning mills.  They will help empower women and adolescent girls through awareness raising and skill building. These participants will educate the wider community about issues and practices that put women and girls at risk. They will help young women join cooperatives to generate alternative incomes and link them with government assistance.  READ will work directly with workers in local mills to create groups to ensure that complaints are addressed by management.  They will work with local government to strengthen protections of workers and ensure legal cases are appropriately addressed.
