The Women’s Organisation for Rural Development (WORD) aims to reduce bonded labour in parts of the textiles industry, especially affecting girls and young women in the spinning mills in Vennandur Block in Namakkal district of Tamil Nadu. It seeks to strengthen the existing community structures and work closely through these to reduce vulnerabilities leading to bonded labour and exploitation of young female workers in the spinning mills. As part of this, existing Community Support Groups (CSGs) will be strengthened and trained to take up the issue of child protection and bonded labour. Adolescents and young workers will be empowered through education, health support and trainings on issues such as workers’ rights, while community resilience will be supported through livelihood support and social protection schemes.
