New anchor donor joins the Freedom Fund Board

August 13, 2019 / Press Releases The Freedom Fund / @freedom_fund

London: The Freedom Fund is pleased to announce that the Cassiopeia Foundation, a private philanthropic fund, has joined the Freedom Fund’s community of investors as its newest anchor donor. The Cassiopeia Foundation, formerly known as Blue Moon Fund, and principal Diane Edgerton Miller, have a strong track record in supporting human rights and climate change, and they will bring this expertise to the Freedom Fund and its Board.

Since its founding five years ago, the Freedom Fund has invested in the most effective interventions on the frontlines of the fight against slavery in countries with a high prevalence of the crime. As part of its new, ambitious five-year strategic plan, the Freedom Fund aims to raise a total of $200 million and transform the systems affecting 10 million of the world’s most vulnerable people by 2025.

The Cassiopeia Foundation’s most recent commitment will go a long way to helping the Freedom Fund reach its goal and scale its impact, particularly supporting initiatives for women and girls, including a new Myanmar hotspot on forced marriage, the Freedom Rising program and ongoing hotspot programs in India and Thailand.

With this new $10m commitment from the Cassiopeia Foundation, the Freedom Fund has reached its milestone target – set by its founders in 2014 – of raising $100m for the fight against slavery by 2020, ahead of schedule.

“We are thrilled to welcome Cassiopeia Foundation to the Freedom Fund,” said Nick Grono, the Freedom Fund’s CEO. “This significant contribution evidences strong confidence and support in the Freedom Fund’s model. The Freedom Fund and Cassiopeia Foundation have an interest in collaborative philanthropy and scaling solutions, and we are excited to partner in our work to end slavery.”

The Cassiopeia Foundation supports initiatives that work to build human and natural resilience to a changing and warming world. It uses natural, social, and financial capital to implement new models in high-diversity regions around the world.

“We are delighted to join the Freedom Fund and share in its mission of ending the scourge of modern slavery,” said Diane Edgerton Miller, President of Cassiopeia Foundation. “Working together, we can create lasting change for millions of people.”

A community of investors has joined the Freedom Fund since its founding in 2014 by Legatum Foundation, Minderoo Foundation and Humanity United. This community now includes Stardust Fund, C&A Foundation, the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, UBS Optimus Foundation, Comic Relief, British Asian Trust and other committed partners. As the Freedom Fund embarks on a new strategic plan, it invites other visionary investors to join in this fight to end modern slavery.
